REVIEW: Ivory Ghosts #2

Book Title: Ivory Ghosts #2
Book Description: Dr. Catherine Sohon transferred from South Africa to the Susuwe Ranger Station in Namibia to get away from memories and try to help prevent the poaching of elephants. On a scouting trip Dr. Sohon observed multiple elephant carcasses with their tusks removed near the border between Namibia and Angola. When Dr. Sohon tries to get closer to take some photos her plane is shot at. She’s very disheartened to see military uniforms and planes with Red Cross markings involved with the poachers. The shock she receives during her investigation the following morning is almost as great. Where does Dr. Sohon go from here?

“Ivory Ghosts” #2 continues to come at the reader with a full head of steam. Between a military that is helping poachers illegally kill elephants and equipment experiencing “technical difficulties” we see just how alone Sohon is on this job.
The rangers in Namibia don’t seem to care about the problem. The military is helping poachers. Seeing the indifferent attitude of the villagers was quite a surprise. The villagers see the elephants as a menace. In a country that has food shortages, how does one keep a creature bigger than your home from raiding your stores? Before reading this issue, I had never considered the possibility that people would want these creatures dead for reasons that aren’t financially motivated.
Debora Carita’s work on the cover and interior pages is absolutely breathtaking. This cover could be used for the box of a video game. I love the attention to detail. I never had the urge to drive a Volkswagen Beetle in the middle of a herd of stampeding elephants. The panels of Dr. Sohon do that permanently put that fire out for me. The notion of one of these creatures veering a smidge to the right could result in the untimely deaths of the vehicle’/s occupants…. Frightening.
The last time I wrote about “Ivory Ghosts” I compared Dr. Sohon to Indiana Jones. I have come to realize that was a mistake. Given her ability to stay focused in any situation and her fearless tenacity I should be comparing Indiana Jones to her. Catherin Sohon stories don’t need a joke packed in them to help move the plot along. She has a storyline that compels the reader to carry on because they have to see what happens next.
As a geek on a budget I urge people to look into “Ivory Ghosts”. It has action, intensity, and the added benefit of being based on a true story! You can get your copy of “Ivory Ghosts” #2 at the gift shop in the Smithsonian or by ordering it through: www.kymerapress.com.

I grew up loving all things geek. I started reading and collecting comics when I was 8. My personal collection has roughly 8,000 books in it. When I’m not doing something geek-related I love spending time with my amazing wife and kids, gaming, and working on cross stitch projects.
