REVIEW: The Surgeon #2

Book Title: The Surgeon #2

Book Description: In the first issue of The Surgeon we met Dr. Jenny Hanover. She was almost done with her residency when life as everyone knows it falls apart. Due to impending nuclear fallout the one percent went underground, leaving everyone else to fend for themselves. Hanover found herself spending 15 years heading west on horseback. She bartered medical services for any supplies she needed. She came to the village of Turtle Island expecting to do more of the same. She found herself making a deal that may end up killing her. She has to turn a village filled with farmers into a militia that can defend themselves from raiders. On an excursion to scavenge for metal to turn into weapons for the villagers they are attacked by a group of raiders called the Hot Animal Machines. We left off with Hanover getting the villagers back inside the walls of Turtle Island before turning to face the Hot Animal Machines. The second installment begins right where we left off. Hanover fearlessly charges headlong into the . They are crazed junkies with no scruples in combat; but this tactic catches them unawares. Hanover makes short work of the Hot Animal Machines. Unfortunately for everyone calling Turtle Island home, one attacker manages to survive and flee. The survivor reports back about what transpired. Now Hanover and company must fortify Turtle Island for an impending invasion. How does one prepare when the enemy is a band of drug-addled lunatics that have no conscience when it comes to the rules of engagement of war?

Summary

Once in a while you come across a title that has the “gotta”. As in, “I’ve gotta see what happens next!” The Surgeon has it in abundance. I liked that we got a different perspective for the narrative of this issue. Changing viewpoints helps add depth to the characters.

This cover artwork promises action that the book is able to deliver on. We get to see Hanover in the middle of a melee with a look of pure determination in her eye. She is going to will herself to victory.

The artwork on the interior pages announces its presence with authority on the first page and only gets better as we move along. We get great depictions of the Hot Animal Machines that show us just how deranged and frightening they can be.

As a geek on a budget I’m all in on The Surgeon. You’re getting a terrific story, phenomenal artwork, and a few laughs along the way. You don’t want to be underground when an opportunity to get this book comes along!

I grew up loving all things geek. I started reading and collecting comics when I was 8. My personal collection has roughly 8,000 books in it. When I’m not doing something geek-related I love spending time with my amazing wife and kids, gaming, and working on cross stitch projects.
