REVIEW: Spare Parts

Book Title: Spare Parts
Book Description: An all female band called Ms. 45 is playing a gig in a dive bar when things get a bit rowdy. The girls end up scrapping with patrons a bit, themselves. After the show the girls are driving down the highway when they’re run off the road by another driver. This results in their van getting a flat tire. A tow truck comes along and takes the girls and their van to his junkyard to fix it. While the girls are in the waiting room the owner of the car that drove them off the road has attached a hose from his car’s exhaust to the ventilation shaft in the room. Before you can say carbon monoxide poisoning the girls are out cold. When the girls wake up they find themselves missing limbs. In place of those limbs are assorted weapons. The girls are led to an arena in the junkyard called the gridiron. There they’re in for the fight of their lives in a gladiator style battle. Who will emerge victorious?

Summary
I picked this one up from my local comic book store because it has a very intriguing cover. I wasn’t sure what I was getting for a story but I was game for a curiosity voyage.
As it turns out, the cover is a movie poster variant. It’s a photo of the movie poster. Apparently Spare Parts is going to be coming to the silver screen sometime soon.
This one reads like a slasher movie so it’s fitting that it’s going to be a movie. We barely get to know the characters before the chaos begins. The book ends so abruptly that it almost feels anticlimactic.
The interior artwork has a few panels of greatness. In those panels you can see a lot of potential if the artwork were paired with a stronger plot. I liked some of the panels from the gridiron.
As a geek on a budget I would say give this one a pass at cover price. The story is unique enough to justify rescuing it from a dollar bin if you see it there… Providing slasher movies are your jam. If not there are plenty of other titles to choose from.

I grew up loving all things geek. I started reading and collecting comics when I was 8. My personal collection has roughly 8,000 books in it. When I’m not doing something geek-related I love spending time with my amazing wife and kids, gaming, and working on cross stitch projects.
