REVIEW: Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog #1

Book Title: Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog #1
Book Description: Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog #1 takes place in the same universe as Killadelphia. We begin in Baltimore. The primary character is a woman named Nita. She’s been dealt a very unfair hand. In her teens her parents were killed at a rally protesting violence, leaving her to raise her younger brother, Jason. He was shot and killed by being in the wrong place at the right time in a drug deal that went bad. Little man was just walking home from school when it happened.
Even though he’s deceased, Jason never left. When he saw the bright light he felt the anger of demons going in the other direction. Jason felt he had an eternity to get back to the bright light, so he followed the demons and ended up back in Baltimore. Nita is able to see him and they converse frequently.
When Nita isn’t with her brother she is an instructor at Morgan State University. There she teaches Parapsychology 101. She also has a website called the Nightmare Blog.
On the Nightmare Blog she describes paranormal activities she has encountered. She also offers her services in a manner similar to Ghost Hunters. Nita does this at Jason’s urging. He knows that there are demons everywhere in Baltimore and wants her to help people.
For Bill Crowdy, a nurse at the Happy Acres Rest Home, Nita’s blog is a godsend. He has a resident that he’s convinced is possessed. If it wasn’t for the fact that he has to have this job because he’s on parole he would have already walked out.
Bill reaches out to Nita for assistance. Will she be able to arrive in time to help or is Bill going to become the next entry in Nita Hawes’ Nightmare Blog?

Summary
When I learned Mr. Barnes was writing this series, I was ecstatic. Killadelphia is one of my favorite series that currently has a monthly title. Getting another story from him set in the same universe was more than I could have hoped for!
The story is compelling and takes little time for the reader to fall into the book. Jason’s story is sad. I have two boys about his age and what happened to him tugged on my heart strings. I loved the character development with Nita. She deserves all the credit in the world for getting back up off the mat when life keeps knocking her down.
There are few variant covers that I see previews of and find myself thinking, “I must have this cover”. I specifically requested this one in a preorder from my local comic book store. I’m not quite sure what this creature is. All I know is it’s the stuff nightmares are made of. I can’t wait to get this one signed and on my wall!
The team of Alexander and Patrick do a tremendous job on the interior artwork! The sadness on Nita’s face when she talks to Tamika about Jason’s birthday brings her to life. As great as it was, it pales in comparison with the creature Nita finds in the alley.
As a geek on a budget I can’t say enough about this book. The $3.99 cover price pays for itself with the quality of the artwork on any of the covers you could get. When you add the story…. That’s like having your bowl of ice cream and THEN getting the whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and cherry! Dig in and enjoy!

I grew up loving all things geek. I started reading and collecting comics when I was 8. My personal collection has roughly 8,000 books in it. When I’m not doing something geek-related I love spending time with my amazing wife and kids, gaming, and working on cross stitch projects.
