REVIEW: I Hate This Place #2

Book Title: I Hate This Place #2
Book Description: In the first installment of “I Hate This Place” we saw that Trudy and Gabby had inherited a farmhouse with land out in the country. Their dreams have come true. They can start their life together and begin making memories. So far, the memories have been things they want to forget. The farmhouse is haunted and seems to be a hotspot for UFO activity. Trudy and Gabby found a VHS tape Gabby’s aunt made. Her aunt apologized for putting them in this position. Gabby’s aunt also told them about some of the rules she’d learned from her years on the farm. 1. Don’t let the creatures touch you. 2. Be inside after dark. 3. Stay out of the forest. 4. If you try to leave the spirits will follow you. Elsewhere we saw that a bank robbery had taken place. The robbers stashed the money somewhere in the forest. When they didn’t have the money the man who planned the job killed them. In the second issue of “I Hate This Place” the girls decide to take their chances by going into town to see a conduit. Their hope is that the conduit will communicate with the spirits so they can all make peace. As it turns out, the conduit is a tarot card reader that can’t help them. Back at the farm there’s a new member on the crew. The man from the bank robbing heist has come to work on the girls’ farm in hopes of getting the chance to rummage through the forest for loot. The crew was left instructions to stay out of the forest and to be gone by sunset. What happens when the crew doesn’t listen and the girls can’t obey their own curfew?

Summary
The first issue of “I Hate This Place” gave us a good foundation to build the story on. Now we’re starting to get some depth and intrigue! I liked how the girls made an attempt at a peaceful resolution with the spirits by going to a conduit. It’s too bad this one wasn’t quite as advertised. Then again, if they had been it would have made for an extremely short series.
I’m also enjoying the underlying plot about the money from the bank robbery. I’m sure “Adrian” will make things interesting before it’s all said and done. I have theories on how this plays out. I’m curious to see if I’m correct.
I liked how this cover was done. The portrayal of Gabby and Trudy precariously balancing on the roof of the house is very eye-catching. The fact that it isn’t comic book click bait and is relevant to the story makes it even better.
I appreciated how well the artwork on the interior pages meshed with the story. It helps pull the reader deeper into the story. I liked the panels with the tarot card reading.
As a geek on a budget I’m finding myself enjoying “I Hate This Place”. It has intensity, relatable characters, and has a great tempo to it. This book is definitely worth checking out!
