About the Book:
Firefly: The Fall Guys #1 takes place approximately 5 years after the events in “Serenity”. There are some changes, as we see a new face in the crew and Kaylee is now the ship’s captain. Some things never change. The crew is so broke they can barely afford the fuel to break atmo on the Moon of Plymouth in the Outer Planets. As a result of their misfortunes, the crew is forced to take a job from the Archambeau Gang. They’ve had a deal go sideways with Archambeau before; but beggars can’t be choosers. Halfway into the job the crew discovers just how in over their heads they truly are.
Reader’s Notes:
I loved the Firefly television series. As we all know, the series was canceled after one season. At the time many people felt that was too soon. A few years later we had the movie, “Serenity”, that gave people more content and closure.
I have come to believe that the show’s cancellation was the best thing that could ever happen to this franchise. It’s much better to end things early with fans wanting more than to carry on for years past its peak and disenchanting fans along the way. By ending things when they did they have inspired 20 years of great content with no end in sight.
Firefly: The Fall Guys #1 is the latest title to be published for the franchise. Sam Humphries hit it out of the park in this one. So far this title is exactly what Firefly fans want. The tempo of the story and cadence of speech feel exactly like the television series. When you add a splash of new characters and a pinch of the crew being in a predicament that leaves them in an unwinnable situation you have something that is going to pick up momentum.
I like the simplicity of this cover. Mal in the foreground with Serenity flying in the background is perfect. It promises the fun and adventure of a franchise that we all know and love.
I liked how the artwork meshed so smoothly with the story. It makes it very easy to fall into this book and forget the world around you. That’s the desired effect every creative team aims for. Well done!
As a geek on a budget I believe that any fan of the Firefly franchise is going to be thrilled with this title. It has captured the magic that made us fall in love with the franchise in the first place. No power in the ‘Verse can stop that feeling.
