One of my favorite things about indie comics is how much freedom creative teams are given. You want “The Italian Job” in the middle of a Godzilla movie? Indie comics can do that. Snow White in a zombie apocalypse? Indie comics have your back. When I was asked to check out a book about a team of cows with superpowers I was very intrigued.
“Bovine League” #1 begins with the team taking on a villain called the Shining One. After dispatching this particular baddie the team is off for a couple days of R and R. We get to see what the members of the Bovine League do in their free time. We then see them come back together to take on another foe, Nandi, that is very powerful.
From cover to cover the artwork is very solid. I really liked how Nandi was depicted when we first met him. The cover is very eye catching. I love the wraparound style that the artwork is done in.
Jumping from scene to scene to see what characters do on their downtime was terrific for character development. With all of the dialogue and editor’s notes there is an incredible amount of information to absorb, almost to the point of information overload. I ended up reading this one twice to make sure that no key bits of information were overlooked.
The combination of a new universe and cast of characters coupled with all the information made it somewhat difficult to settle into the story. It reads a lot like a Quentin Tarantino movie. My advice is to see it through to the end because it all comes together. The feeling when the light comes on is like none other.
If you’re looking for a change of pace “Bovine League” #1 is just what the doctor ordered. There is currently a special running for the geeks on a budget out there on this issue. You can get a digital copy of the book for $2.99! Just click on the link below and enjoy.
