New Indie Comic Distributor Launches – Maverick Distribution

Jon Velez of Encased Comics announced Maverick Distribution, a startup comic book distribution company, this week via the Encased Comics Instagram page. Velez commented on the venture, “I saw a need for our indie and small press publishers to find a way onto the shelves of retail stores and in the hands of the customers, I wanted to fill that need with the experiences I have learned as a retailer myself.”

Maverick Distribution is located out of San Marcos, CA is a distribution service for all independent comic creators or small press publishers. With the ever-changing comic book industry and distribution services, Maverick Distribution offers a way to help independent comic creators and small press publisher get their books in the hands of retailers and readers.

Maverick has opened with a focus on quality of shipping. The organization guarantees all books will be bagged and boarded prior to shipping to the retailers, reducing the time retailers themselves spend bagging and boarding, but also reduce the number of comics damaged in transit as they will be better protected.

Following Velez’s announcement of Maverick Distribution, 3 small press publishers have announced distribution deals with the startup – Catalyst Comics, Ovation Comics, and SoveReign Comics.

John Schlim Jr., owner of Ovation Comics, said, “There are so many small press comics publishers out there and it’s difficult for each one to individually appeal to a wide number of retailers. That represents a lot of vendor relationships for retailers to manage. And if one small press publisher provides poor service or inferior product, it often reflects negatively on all of them. Maverick represents an opportunity for select publishers to become part of a focused nationwide outreach to retailers with the promise of vetted products as well as reliable and professional service.”

As far as their distribution network goes, Velez says, “We are engaging with various comic book stores that have been interested in joining our retailer distribution list and once details have been confirmed they will be added to our website. We are open to any LCS, whether brick and mortar or online, that want to stock the titles we have available for distribution.”

Maverick Distro hasn’t yet put a limit on the number of creators and titles they’ll feature. Creators interested in distribution with Maverick should review the submission guidelines at https://maverickcomicdistro.com/pages/policies, and once they are ready, they can upload their documents using the online submission form at https://maverickcomicdistro.com/pages/submit-comics “We want to be sure we are a fit for each other because, in the end, Maverick’s engagement with the indie creator or small press publisher is a vital step to starting a professional relationship,” Velez added.
