Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland #2 gives us three short stories. “Death and Rebirth of Cloudia” gives us a glimpse in Claudia’s psyche. “The Hunchover” is a cautionary tale of what can happen when one imbibes in too many adult beverages. “Gameday” shows Gertrude working on her anger management issues by playing cards.

Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland brings the hits with its sophomore installment. All three stories are fun. They give more insight to characters we know and love while continuing to find ways to tickle the funny bone.
“The Death and Rebirth of Cloudia” is an outstanding piece on the duality of the Queen. In trying to do the best she could as queen she didn’t realize how much she had come to despise Fairyland itself. It takes a conversation akin to Sméagol and Gollum’s for her to come to grips with her feelings.
Just about everyone has at least one story that involves imbibing in too many adult beverages and parts of evenings are a blur at best.Things are said and done that we regret… Once we learn about them. “The Hunchover” is Gertrude’s version of this experience. It’s entertaining to watch her meander from place to place in hopes of finding clues to what transpired.
“Gameday” struck a chord with me. I love gaming when the opportunity presents itself. That being said, my wife and the majority of my gaming friends work an opposite schedule to mine. One of the games my wife loves to play is Munchkin. It’s fun to play; but my wife beats the tar out of me EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. WE. PLAY.
Out of the gate she’ll get items that make her formidable to most mid level monsters. I end up with items that can only be used by races or classes that I am not. She fights level one slugs and is easily victorious. I get a level 20 dragon that charbroils me, and kills me. She loots the body for the best item and everything else is vaporized. When I come back to life I get even worse items. I can understand how Gertrude would react the way she did.
I liked the homage to Atlas on the cover. It’s a fun way to encapsulate all of the characters that we see in these stories. This approach catches one’s attention and piques curiosity. That’s what you want when the creative team isn’t available to talk about the story.
The artwork on the interior pages is terrific for stories of this nature. The animated feel helps tone down how graphic things can get when Gertie loses her temper, or is in combat, or has someone look at her funny, or has a bad day, or if someone just happens to be in the wrong place at the right time.
As a fan of the I Hate Fairyland franchise, this geek on a budget is thrilled to have there’s short outtakes that we get with Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland. If you want something fluffing quick to read that gives you action and laughs look no further.
