About the Book:
Jesus Delgado is the Savior. He has been resurrected by God to do his work. Jesus has all of the powers of God, so long as his intentions and actions remain true to God’s will. The Fallen have come to Los Angeles in search of souls. All that stands between them and victory is a battle weary Jesus who’s powers have been exhausted.
Reader’s Notes:
I find it odd that religion and comics aren’t better bedfellows. When you think about it, comic books and the Bible are not as different as people like to believe. At their base level both tell stories about a hero and promote being a good person.
The way nerds can embrace an all powerful alien from another planet that has the sole purpose of protecting humanity from evil while shunning the idea that God exists is perplexing. I also feel believing a collection of stories about God and Jesus (which was written by man) as an absolute truth that is to be taken verbatim whilst looking down one’s nose at comics is wrong too.
Comics about God and his message are an ideal way to connect with children. They don’t want or need to be lectured at by a priest on a topic that’s not relevant to them. They don’t want to be singing hymns at church with an organ that is so loud it’s difficult to concentrate.
Savior is that connection for the preteen crowd. We get stories told to us in a way that is understandable, entertaining, and in a modern setting. It talks about God’s love and power. We see key players from the Bible. We learn a little bit about the Fallen. I would have liked a bit more story to go with all of the action. That withstanding, Mr. Kittrell has captured lightning in a bottle with this title.
I liked how the artwork on the cover is done. It’s exciting. It’s intense. It commands attention and makes people want to know more about it. It was enough to make me click “add to cart” without having much of a premise to go off of.
The artwork on the interior pages gives the reader everything they could want. The Fallen look sinister. The angels are awe inspiring. Michael looks like even more of a gladiator than I had imagined.
As a geek on a budget I believe Savior #1 is well worth the price of admission. We get plenty of action coupled with a contemporary way of learning about the word of God.
