About the Book:

The first initial story of the mythical creatures known as Gargoyles.  Which is based on the Disney TV series of the same name.

Reviewer’s Notes:

This story starts off with a bang, as the main character known as Elisa is involved in a car chase, revealing her police status.  When her partner asks for backup and Elisa points out backup is already on the way, and the backup happens to be gargoyles come to life.

Now this comic is based on the Disney tv cartoon in the 90’s of the same name, the thing that I found right from the get go is that the beginning rushes into introducing the characters a little bit, with Elisa giving background as they appear. Which is fine, to a certain degree because if you never watched the 90’s cartoon, you might not know who the players are.

One other thing that I noticed is that in the book, the female detective Elisa and the Leader of the Gargoyles Goliath are already in a relationship, which in the cartoon series, they only hinted at.  Which makes sense as the show was geared more to a younger generation than even myself at the time that the show was on the air.

The unfortunate part is that while the story starts off with excitement, unless you loved the TV series as a child of the 90’s, there is not enough there to make you want to invest in the characters.  Now I concede that all good stories need build up, and this one is certainly starting to do that.  So maybe the next issue will  be able to make the reader, who would be new to this universe, want to follow along and allow this series to continue.

The cover is good enough to be a poster.  The level of detail in the cover is amazing and shows a love and care for the Gargoyles IP that was previously established in the TV series, capturing the essence of the characters beautifully.

The interior art is well done as well, looking very finished and coming across as yet another episode of the wonderful TV series.  For someone who watched the TV series initially, I fell right into place as if it was just a series reboot.

Overall as a geek who grew up in the 80’s and 90’s, the original TV series put out by Disney was a staple in my afternoon time frame when getting home, and this series does a wonderful job capturing the feelings from that time frame.

Growing up in the 80s and 90s I grew up as an eclectic geek, a fact that still holds true today. If I am not adulting then I can readily be found doing something geek-related. When I am not doing something geek-related I enjoy spending time with my wonderful family and friends!
