Black Star Collectibles is Committed to Showcasing Black Indie Comics

If you don’t know the name Black Star Collectibles, you should, it is quickly becoming one of the flagship stores for black indie comics in the United States! Black Star Collectibles, a toy store at the South Bay Pavilion Mall in Carson, CA, opened in the midst of the COVID pandemic. It features, toys, comic books, and dolls with heroes almost exclusively of color. The store was founded by owners Kareem Burton and Feon Cooper
“We’re going to really, really give the people a grand experience into the comic and toy biz,” said Kareem Burton, co-owner of Black Star Collectibles, in a recent interview with ABC 7 News. “The concept of the store just came from just realizing that there wasn’t the representation of people of color in this field.”
Co-Owner Feon Cooper says, “Black Star Collectibles Is a pro black pop culture Collectibles store, our focus is to highlight Black Pop Culture, and highlight Black representation. One of our main goals is to give a platform to independent Black creators of the pop culture industry, that is, comics, books, or toys creators. We want to highlight their work and talent. We stand by the fact that we’re heroes too and representation matters.”
Cooper has been adamant on social media and creator groups that Black Star will be a place where the general public can find and buy independent comics from black creators. “The goal is to get as many different Black creator books inside the store as possible, we want you to have a platform and build a brand within our customer base.”
As more creators are looking beyond Kickstarters and convention sales, partners like Black Star Collectibles will become increasingly crucial. David Crownson, creator of Harriet Tubman Demon Slayer, stated, “Black Star Collectables is a valuable asset to the culture because it’s important for Black children to see themselves reflected not only in comic books but in the adults who not only work in a comic book shop, but OWN it..”
